Work for Love
Love is a gift
that can truly bring us alive and
bring life to our community.
Work for Love (WfL) is a
community-based organization that is active in connecting and
uplifting local communities through
initiatives focused on education and health care. Work for Love
operates in the informal settlement of Masiphumelele (isiXhosa
for ‘we will succeed’) on the outskirts of Cape Town, 40-50km
from the city centre. An estimated 14,000 people live in this
area in simple core houses or informal dwellings made of corrugated
iron, wood, plastics and cardboard, many overcrowded and without
water and sanitation. Unemployment, Aids, malnutrition, alcohol
abuse and domestic violence are widespread.
Despite these debilitating
influences, the people of Masiphumelele possess a vibrant
spirit. Since this township is relatively small, it is a popular
destination for visitors and volunteers are well received.
Closer integration into the relatively affluent local
communities will enhance the lives of all in the area.
Since 2005, Work for Love’s
volunteers have been offering their time and skills in
establishing a number of different initiatives.
The philosophy behind Work for Love is one of finding and
building on knowledge and experience present in the local
communities, recognizing and developing people’s resources and
facilitating their support of each other.
